What actually changes between indoor and outdoor SMD screens
Indoor and outdoor SMD screens share the same fundamental architecture — a grid of surface-mounted LEDs driven by a controller — but almost every component is different in detail. The LED package, the cabinet, the IP sealing, the power supply, the cabling, the structural mounting, and the calibration profile are all engineered for a specific operating environment.
An outdoor SMD screen has to survive direct sunlight, monsoon rain, dust storms, ambient temperatures from 4 to 50 degrees Celsius depending on the city, vibration from nearby traffic, and a lifespan measured in years of unattended operation on a pole. The cabinet is sealed to IP65 standards, the LEDs are higher-brightness 5,500 to 10,000 nit bins, the power supplies are derated for heat, and the structural design accounts for wind load and corrosion.
An indoor SMD screen has to deliver high pixel density, accurate colour, and high refresh rates at close viewing distance. The cabinet is slim and front-serviceable, the LEDs are 600 to 1,000 nit bins (high brightness indoors looks washed out and tires the eyes), the IP rating is typically IP30 or IP31, and the operating environment is air-conditioned and stable. Don't mix the two up — installing indoor LED outdoors is a guaranteed failure within weeks.
Brightness and IP rating — the two specs that matter most
Brightness is measured in nits (candelas per square metre). Indoor SMD screens run at 600 to 1,000 nits — anything brighter is uncomfortable and shortens module life. Outdoor SMD screens run at 5,500 to 10,000 nits because direct sunlight on the cabinet face overwhelms anything dimmer. The difference is roughly an order of magnitude, and it cannot be cheated by turning the brightness up on an indoor panel.
IP rating measures protection against solid objects (first digit) and water ingress (second digit). Indoor LED is rated IP30 or IP31 — protected against fingers and small objects, no real water resistance. Outdoor LED is rated IP65 from the front and at least IP54 from the rear — fully dust-tight and protected against driving water from any direction. Pakistani monsoons in Karachi and Lahore make IP65 non-negotiable for any outdoor install.
A useful sanity check: if you can see the sky from the install location, even indirectly, you need outdoor cabinets. Open atriums with skylights, semi-covered walkways, glass-walled showrooms with strong direct sunlight, and ground-floor lobbies with large open entrance doors all push you towards outdoor or at minimum semi-outdoor cabinets and high-brightness modules.
How pixel pitch differs between indoor and outdoor
Indoor pixel pitches start fine — P0.9, P1.2, P1.5 — because viewers stand within 1 to 4 metres of the wall. Text, logos, and detailed video must remain crisp at arm's length. The fine pitch is what makes the wall feel like a high-resolution display rather than a video billboard.
Outdoor pixel pitches start coarser — P3 at the finest end, more commonly P5, P6, P8, or P10 — because viewers are 10 to 50 metres away and looking at high-impact bold imagery. A P3 outdoor billboard at 30 metres viewing distance is wasted money; the eye cannot resolve the difference between P3 and P6 from a moving car. Conversely, a P10 outdoor screen mounted 8 metres away from foot traffic looks blocky and unprofessional.
The simple rule: closest viewing distance in metres, multiplied by roughly 1, gives the maximum useful pixel pitch in millimetres. A wall viewed from 3 metres needs around P3 or finer; a billboard viewed from 30 metres needs around P10 or finer; for premium content (text, logos), halve the figure. Going finer than this rule suggests is money you cannot see on screen.
What happens when you choose the wrong type
Indoor cabinets installed outdoors fail predictably. The first monsoon causes water ingress through the rear, shorting out modules and power supplies. Direct sunlight at noon overwhelms the 800-nit modules — the screen becomes unreadable for the busiest hours of the day. Heat builds up in the unsealed enclosure, accelerating LED degradation. Within three to six months, dim patches and dead pixels appear; within a year, the wall is non-functional and the warranty has been voided because the cabinet was deployed outside its rated environment.
Outdoor cabinets installed indoors are wasteful but not catastrophic. The 8,000-nit modules, when run at indoor brightness levels of around 800 nits, deliver lower colour accuracy and use far more module headroom than necessary. The IP65 cabinet is slower to service because it is sealed against weather you do not have. The pixel pitch on outdoor cabinets typically starts at P3 — too coarse for indoor viewing distances. You have spent twice the money for an inferior indoor experience.
The most common Pakistani-market mistake is the third category: semi-outdoor installations in covered but un-conditioned spaces — petrol-pump canopies, mosque courtyards, factory floors near open shutters, atrium feature walls under skylights. These need outdoor-rated brightness and IP54 or better sealing even though they are technically "indoors". Specifying a standard indoor cabinet here is the most common cause of warranty failure in the first year.
The semi-outdoor question
Semi-outdoor environments are the grey zone where most field-failure happens. Petrol-pump canopies, covered drive-throughs, partially open warehouses, marquee venues, mosque courtyards, and atrium installs under skylights all share the same risk profile: the cabinet is shielded from direct rain but exposed to high ambient brightness, dust, humidity swings, and occasional water spray.
For these environments we typically specify a semi-outdoor cabinet — IP54 or IP43 sealing, 2,000 to 3,500 nit modules, slightly heavier construction than full indoor — or a full outdoor cabinet if budget allows. The premium over standard indoor is meaningful but the premium over warranty failure and replacement is much higher.
Always describe the install environment honestly when getting a quote. Telling a vendor an installation is "indoor" when it is really a covered open-front showroom with a glass facade is the fastest route to a warranty dispute. We would rather quote semi-outdoor cabinets in 60 percent of borderline cases than have to re-deploy after the first season.
Pakistani climate considerations
Karachi and the lower Sindh coast face high humidity year-round, salt air corrosion near the coast, and intense direct sunlight. Cabinets here need IP65 sealing as a minimum and corrosion-resistant fasteners. Salt-air resistance is a meaningful spec for installations within 5 km of the coast.
Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan, and the Punjab plain swing from cold winter mornings (4 to 8 degrees Celsius) to summer peaks of 45 to 48 degrees Celsius. Power-supply derating for heat is essential — supplies rated for 25-degree ambient operation will throttle or fail under sustained 45-degree afternoon use on a black-painted cabinet. Specify supplies rated for 50-degree ambient as standard.
Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and the northern belt have lower peak temperatures but more freeze-thaw cycling in winter. IP65 sealing prevents condensation ingress; supplies must operate down to 0 degrees Celsius without lockout. The monsoon hits all major cities meaningfully — assume 200 to 800 mm of annual rainfall depending on the city, much of it concentrated in 60 to 90 days.
Quetta and Peshawar add high dust loading to the picture. Outdoor cabinets need pressurised ventilation or sealed convection cooling rather than simple fan-driven airflow that pulls dust through the enclosure. Filter inspection becomes a quarterly maintenance line, not annual.
How to decide between indoor and outdoor in five questions
1. Can the install location see the sky directly or indirectly through skylights or glass? If yes, you are at minimum semi-outdoor. If the location has any direct sunlight on the screen face for any part of the day, you are full outdoor.
2. Will the screen ever face driving rain or be exposed to standing water on its face? If yes, full outdoor IP65 cabinet, no exceptions.
3. What is the closest viewer distance in metres? Multiply by roughly 1 to get maximum pixel pitch in millimetres. Indoor environments at 1 to 5 metre viewing need fine indoor pitches (P1.2 to P2.5). Outdoor environments at 10 to 50 metre viewing comfortably take P5 to P10.
4. What is the operating environment's ambient brightness? Air-conditioned office or boardroom: indoor 800 to 1,000 nit. Atrium with skylight or showroom with glass facade: 2,500 to 3,500 nit semi-outdoor. Direct outdoor sunlight: 5,500 to 10,000 nit full outdoor.
5. What is the install duty cycle? 8 hours/day in a controlled environment justifies indoor. 24/7 in a road-side advertising context demands full outdoor with redundant power and SLA cover.
If any one answer pushes you towards outdoor or semi-outdoor, specify accordingly. Don't average across answers. The wrong specification reveals itself in months and is rarely cheap to fix.
