Indoor SMD (Surface-Mounted Device) screens are LED video walls assembled from cabinets of densely packed, surface-mounted LEDs. Each LED is a single pixel; the millimetre distance between two pixels is the pixel pitch — the most important indoor specification.

Indoor LED is engineered very differently from outdoor LED. Pixel density matters more than brightness, refresh rate matters more than weather sealing, and cabinet design prioritises slim depth, front maintenance, and silent operation. The result is a seamless, bezel-free wall that performs at close viewing distance — something traditional LCD video-wall arrays cannot match.

Considerations

Plan ahead.

Indoor LED is rated IP30 / IP31 — protected against solid objects, not water. Don't deploy near open kitchens, swimming pools, or in semi-outdoor walkways unless the cabinet is explicitly rated.

Air-conditioning matters. Sustained 600+ nits brightness in a poorly ventilated room shortens module life. We size HVAC requirements as part of the engineering review.

Ambient light affects perceived brightness. Walls in atriums with skylights need higher peak nits than rooms with controlled lighting — we calibrate to the actual room, not the spec sheet.

Power. A typical 5 m × 3 m P2.5 wall draws 5–7 kW peak. Verify circuit capacity early; new dedicated circuits are common.
